The holiday season is approaching fast, which means it’s time to start thinking about holiday drinks! At the top of our list is this Authentic Puerto Rican Coquito recipe that I’m excited to share with you today.
What is Coquito?
Coquito is a rum-based cocktail that is traditionally served around Christmas and New Year’s in Puerto Rico. It is a rich and creamy coconut drink with rum. Similar to eggnog in its consistency, creaminess, and spices, coquito can be made with or without eggs. This recipe for coquito does not contain eggs.
What does Coquito taste like?
Coquito is a very rich, sweet, and creamy alcoholic beverage. If you’re a fan of coconut, rum, and cinnamon, you will love this recipe for coquito!
How do you make Authentic Puerto Rican Coquito?
Coquito is an easy drink to make at home for the holidays. You’ll combine one can each of evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, and cream of coconut with some white rum, plus some vanilla and cinnamon. Mix everything together in your blender, chill for a couple hours, and serve!
Kitchen tools and equipment you’ll need:
- Blender
- Liquid measuring cup
- Measuring spoons
- Glass jar with lid for storage in the fridge
Ingredients in this recipe:
- Evaporated milk
- Sweetened condensed milk
- Cream of coconut
- Vanilla extract
- Cinnamon
- Bacardi white rum
A few additional notes…
Coquito should be served very cold and in small glasses. After chilling in the fridge, you’ll need to shake the coquito to mix it up again, since it has a tendency to separate. For this reason, I recommend storing coquito in a large glass mason jar with a lid.
If you’d like to make a non-alcoholic version of coquito, simply substitute coconut milk for the rum!
Coquito also makes a nice homemade holiday gift! Check out How to Make Coquito for a Homemade Holiday Gift to learn how to decorate your own Coquito gift.
How do you make Coquito with tea?
Some versions of coquito are made with the addition of a homemade spiced tea. If you’d like to try this, you can make the tea by heating two cups of water in a small saucepan with cinnamon sticks, along with some fresh ginger and whole cloves.
After simmering the tea for about 10-15 minutes, remove from the heat, and let it cool to room temperature. Strain the tea, and add ½ to 1 cup to the coquito mixture in the blender.

Absolutely delicious. I added a cup of rum. Shhhh! I used it in place of Bailey’s for my coffee.
