Hot buttered rum with apple cider is the perfect drink for cold winter nights, especially around the holidays. The combination of brown sugar, butter, rum and spices goes so well with apple cider, it may just become your new favorite Christmas drink! Here’s how you can make a single serving of this warm winter cocktail.

What is Hot Buttered Rum?

Hot Buttered Rum is a drink that is traditionally made with rum, butter and hot water, along with sugar and spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. Many recipes are written to make a batch of hot buttered rum mix to serve a crowd. I’ve written this recipe so it’s easy to make a single serving of hot buttered rum, and I’ve replaced the hot water with apple cider to give it more flavor!

How do you make Hot Buttered Rum?

This recipe is super quick and easy to make. You’ll heat the apple cider so it’s hot but not boiling. I usually microwave the apple cider, but you could also heat it on the stove. Then you’ll place the butter, cinnamon and nutmeg in a mug and add the hot apple cider. Stir to melt the butter, and then add the rum.

I highly recommend topping this drink with whipped cream, and an extra sprinkle of nutmeg and cinnamon! The whipped cream adds an extra layer of creaminess, while the spices on top intensify the flavors of the drink.

Ingredients

  • Apple cider
  • Butter
  • Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg
  • Aged rum
  • Whipped cream

Some tips for making this recipe

This recipe is best with real butter, since the butter flavor will be prominent! The best kind of rum to use is one that has a rich flavor, such as an aged rum (I like Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum for this drink). I’ve tried using a white rum in this recipe, and it really doesn’t work well. For the apple cider, I use a Honeycrisp cider that is super delicious. Feel free to adjust the amount of butter and sugar in this recipe, as well!
